Grab a cup of coffee, get cozy, and let’s converse about the magic of building relationships with other Black-owned businesses to strengthen your brand.

Picture this: It was a sunny Saturday morning, and I found myself at a local farmer’s market, ready to stock up on fresh ingredients for my catering event. As I walked through the aisles, a friendly face caught my eye – Chef Soreeta, the owner of The Brown Cow Bakeshop. We have chit chatted a few times before, but this time was different. Chef Soreeta had an idea, and she thought we could collaborate on a special event – a farmers’ market-themed brunch! The excitement in her voice was contagious, and I couldn’t resist her enthusiasm. Fast forward to the event, and it was a smashing success! Our businesses flourished, and our community had a blast. That day, I realized the immense power of collaboration in our industry.

Now, here’s a golden nugget of wisdom for you: Collaborating with other businesses is not just about expanding your network; it’s about creating unique experiences that resonate with your target audience. When you team up with like-minded partners, you tap into a world of creativity and innovation. And the best part? Your customers will love it! When they see you collaborating with other Black-owned brands, it builds trust in your own business. It’s like vouching for each other’s quality and commitment.

So, let’s get to the nitty-gritty. How can you apply this in your business journey? Start by identifying businesses in Oklahoma City that share your values and target audience. For some of you, this will require you to get out of your comfort zone and seek out business relationships in spaces uncommon to you.  I must stress that shared values must be clarified and understood before any resources are allocated and money is exchanged.  Trust me!  I’ve learned the hard way.  Next, reach out to them, grab a coffee (or a virtual one), and brainstorm ways to collaborate. Maybe it’s a joint event, a themed menu, or even cross-promotions on social media. The possibilities are endless!  Once you have decided on the concept, create a scope of work with roles and responsibilities.  If possible, review the agreement with your business attorney or trusted advisor.  Both parties should sign the document and share copies with each other.  Why is this important?  One, creates the framework for clear expectations and reduces mishaps.  Two, it’s just good business ethics.  Three, if you can’t agree on terms to conduct business, find a constructive approach to move on.

Now, here’s my question to you: Have you ever had a memorable collaboration that boosted your business? Or perhaps you’re facing challenges when it comes to forming these relationships? Share your stories and let’s learn from each other. We’re all in this together, after all!

And before we wrap this up, here’s your call to action: If you find this editorial helpful and inspiring, tell your friends.
