Critical to Black entreprenuers success has been the unwavering support from their community, boosted by initiatives aimed at increasing visibility and patronage. The upward trend of support Oklahoma City underscores the vital role of support systems. These systems include not just financial backing but also platforms for promotion and community engagement metro-wide.
As support grows, we find ourselves in a pressure cooker. More than I can to count, political and business leaders are reinforcing a message that in order for (insert business name) to be successful, “the community must support it”. This message drives boils my blood. Especially, when it’s echoed by politicians or community leaders who’ve never operated a successful business or self-raised capital.
Placing the responsibility of long-term success and support on people living in communities with limited resources can be detrimental for several reasons, and it conveys complex messages to those community members.
Firstly, it suggests a lack of understanding and empathy towards the challenges faced by people living in low-income areas. These communities often grapple with systemic issues like lower access to quality education, fewer employment opportunities, and limited healthcare services, which can hinder their ability to support local businesses to the extent that might be expected in more affluent areas. Asking residents who are already surviving on limited incomes to shoulder the burden of ensuring the success of local businesses can come across as insensitive to their daily struggles to meet basic needs.
Moreover, it implies an abdication of responsibility by those in positions of power to create and sustain an environment where businesses can thrive. Political leaders have the resources and authority to implement policies and programs that can significantly impact economic development, such as investing in local infrastructure, providing incentives for businesses to operate in underserved areas, and offering financial support or training for entrepreneurs. By not taking these steps and instead placing the onus on low-income communities, it signals a failure to leverage their unique position to foster economic growth and improve the quality of life for these residents. Add in party politics with personal agendas, it’s no surprise that empty campaign promises are not fullfilled.
This approach also risks perpetuating a cycle of poverty and economic stagnation. Without adequate economic infrastructure and effective political leaders, businesses in low-income areas may struggle to scale, just on the principal that the wrong person is sitting in the right seat at the table. This can lead to a scenario where community members must travel outside their neighborhood for work, shopping, and services, further disadvantaging businesses in the community and inhibiting community cohesion and pride.
Are the problems small businesses face, soley to blame on politics? Nope!
Business owners bear a critical responsibility to navigate past the shadows of economic injustice towards the sustainability and success of their enterprises. Acknowledging historical economic disparities is essential, yet it cannot serve as a crutch for operational deficiencies such as inconsistent operating hours, inadequate business planning, and insufficient advertising efforts. To thrive in a competitive marketplace, business owners must proactively address these foundational aspects of their operations. Implementing rigorous planning, maintaining consistent service hours, and executing effective marketing strategies are not just business imperatives; they are acts of empowerment. By doing so, entrepreneurs not only elevate their ventures but also contribute to dismantling the very barriers erected by historical inequities. Furthermore, they can become shining examples signaling it is possible to open a business and succeed in historically divested communities.
Likewise, transitioning from recognizing to actively countering the impact of economic injustice requires an entrepreneurial spirit that is both resilient and innovative. Business owners must look inward to harness their strengths, identify weaknesses, and seek continuous improvement. This means embracing best practices in business management, leveraging technology for marketing and operations, and fostering a culture of excellence and customer service.
